Cake flavors are easier to choose once you know what sits between the layers, because the name on the box rarely tells you what the filling is. At Mia’s, the cakes ordered most online are the edible image cake, strawberry shortcake, Brooklyn blackout and tres leches.

Our best-selling cake flavors
Two of our six best sellers are designs, and you choose the flavor inside them. The other four are flavors in their own right, and none of them is a buttercream cake.
- Edible image cake. We personalize the top with an edible image, framed by a border in the color you choose. Underneath it can be any of 18 flavors, so an edible image cake can still be a Brooklyn blackout or a red velvet.
- Strawberry shortcake. Fluffy vanilla cake with fresh strawberries layered between, finished with whipped cream we make every day.
- Brooklyn blackout. Chocolate cake with a smooth chocolate custard in the middle, covered in chocolate cake crumbs.
- Tres leches. A soft sponge soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream, topped with whipped cream.
- Vintage heart cake. A heart-shaped cake in pink, white, lavender or black, piped with vintage-style buttercream, rosettes and pearl accents. You choose the flavor, and the message on top is free.
- Red velvet. Cocoa-tinted red layers with tangy cream cheese frosting between them and all over the outside.
Right behind them came chocolate fudge, chocolate layer, tiramisu and chocolate mousse.

Cupcake and cheesecake flavors
Our cupcakes come in 12 flavors, from chocolate chocolate and red velvet to crème brûlée, cookie dough and strawberry banana. You can mix any of them in a 6-pack or a 12-pack. Our assorted 12-pack holds one of each, which is the easiest way to try them all.
Most of our cheesecakes are New York style. Besides the classic, we make apple, blueberry, caramel, cherry, Oreo, pecan pie and strawberry versions.
Why the filling matters as much as the cake
Look down the right-hand column and you’ll see that mousse fills far more of our cakes than buttercream. We save buttercream for a few cakes, like the vanilla bean and the rainbow.
On the outside, whipped cream is the finish you’ll see most often, plain or flavored with lemon or raspberry. Red velvet and carrot get cream cheese frosting, and the chocolate layer cake is covered in glossy ganache.
A simple way to choose is by texture. Mousse, whipped cream and fresh fruit give you a lighter slice, which is welcome after a big dinner. Fudge, custard, cream cheese frosting and coconut-pecan icing give you a richer one.
Choosing a flavor for the occasion and the guest list
Weddings
Our wedding cakes start from chocolate, vanilla, carrot or red velvet, paired with fillings such as vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, strawberry, raspberry, caramel, custards and mousses. Our wedding cake flavors guide goes through the wedding options in detail, including frostings and the groom’s cake.
A mixed crowd
When you can’t agree on one flavor, order two smaller cakes instead of one large one. A chocolate cake next to a fruity one, such as a Brooklyn blackout beside a strawberry shortcake, gives both camps a slice they want. You can browse every flavor and size on our cakes menu.
Vegan and gluten-free guests
We bake several cakes for guests who avoid gluten, dairy or eggs. The hazelnut and peanut butter cakes are both gluten-free and vegan, and both are chocolate cakes. Our gluten-free range also includes a chocolate mousse cake, a caramel mocha cake, a hazelnut marquise and a milk chocolate panna cotta. For vegan guests there is an Oreo cake, a raspberry cake on vanilla sponge and a chocolate fudge cake, plus vegan cupcakes in two flavors. The full list is in our gluten-free and vegan collection.
How to order the flavor you want
You can pick up your order at our Brooklyn, Upper East Side or Times Square shop. You can also choose delivery to Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. We bake every cake in our Brooklyn kitchen, as we have since 2015.
For a cake with your own design, you choose the flavor, the frosting and the decorations. You can also add an edible image or a personal message. Fill in the request form on our custom cakes page with your flavors, design ideas and dietary needs. We’ll send you a quote. Custom cakes start at $100, and the price rises with the size, the design and the level of detail. To order for a birthday, start from our birthday cakes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular cake flavor?
Chocolate and vanilla are the most popular, and almost every bakery menu starts from them. Most of our flavors begin with one or the other, and the filling is what sets them apart.
What are the best flavors for a birthday cake?
Start with the flavor the birthday person loves, then think about the guests. For a children’s party, the rainbow cake’s six colored layers make the slicing part of the fun.
What filling goes best with vanilla cake?
Our favorite is fresh strawberries with whipped cream. That is the filling in our strawberry shortcake, our best-selling flavor. Lemon whipped cream with blueberries, raspberry with peaches, and toasted almond mousse are lighter alternatives.
What filling goes best with chocolate cake?
We like chocolate custard best. Our Brooklyn blackout pairs it with chocolate cake, and it is our second best-selling flavor. Cherries and chocolate mousse make a black forest, and coconut-pecan icing makes a German chocolate cake.
Can each tier be a different flavor?
It can. We have made a two-tier wedding cake with coconut on one tier and lemon blueberry on the other. Tell us the flavor you want for each tier in your request, and we’ll confirm what works with your design.
Can I taste cake flavors before ordering?
Yes, for wedding cakes. We hold tastings by appointment so you can try our cakes and fillings before you place your order. For any other occasion, try our mystery cake platter. It holds 12 slices, 8 of cake and 4 of cheesecake, chosen by us from our popular and seasonal flavors.
